Randal Remix

Coach Mariah & Coach Randal

I have previously blogged about my admiration for Coach Randal Setzler of Crossfit Central.

And I'm about to do it again.

You see the great thing about Crossfit is that we evaluate fitness across a range of dimensia, which is a greater measure for 'fittest man or woman' than some other measures at large in the fitness industry (e.g. who can do the most lat pulldowns with the most precision / strut around the stage in JUST THE RIGHT pair of clear heels / wink at JUST the right judge and get their spray tan done JUST RIGHT).

As a student of Crossfit, you can begin to admire and apprentice yourself under people whose strengths don't line up with your own. As I've done with Randal.

Randal is strong as an ox, lithe, fast, and in the top 1% for gymnastics movements.

The only place Randal gets short-changed in Crossfit is when there is a prescribed weight for something, e.g. a 90 lb snatch, as Randal has a small frame and is himself only 140 scale lbs (almost all of it muscle). A 6'2", 220-lb ox is going to be able to crush Randal on a workout with a set weight.

Yesterday however we did a workout that called for participants to deadlift their bodyweight, then do burpies, then pushups. So effectively: move your bodyweight through space and time as fast as you possibly can. Randal annihilated all of us.

So I'm mostly blogging out of mad respect, love, and props to Randal. I am working to call myself his peer by next summer. For now I am most definitely his apprentice.

As an aside: Randal hosts circus every Sunday at Barton Springs. All are welcome!
