"If You're Gonna Do Something,,."

The most vivid memory I have from childhood is my father's use of the phrase, "If you're gonna do something, do it right; don't do it half-____."

My clearest recollection of him using the phrase happened one Sunday afternoon when I was about 10 years old. Dad had asked me to help clean up a certain part of our garage. I started the project and, all of about 10 minutes later, was finished.

When I returned to him beaming, dad didn't seem as proud as I had hoped. Entering the still-horrific disaster area, he let go of the small, soft hand I had laced through his strong, tired fingers.

Dad sighed, and explained to me his principle that, "If you're going to do something, do it right. Don't do it half-____." It's a mantra that has worked well for him, and he is now one of the few successful commercial voice talents in the country: an industry writhe with attrition, failures and unmet dreams.

Dad made me me redo the garage that day, which is likely why I remember this particular lesson so vividly. Later he would sit me down more gently and explain to me that he didn't care what I became in life. I could become a shoe-shiner or an ice-cream scooper for all he cared. But he'd be proudest of my when I became the best shoe-shiner and the most skilled ice-cream scooper - the one who people came from miles around to see.
