Evaluate Your Thoughts

We are a generation waiting for the breakthrough.

The scene in the movie where we meet the person who fixes us.

The scene in the movie where some person who 'gets' us more intimately perhaps, than we get ourselves, looks at us and says, "it's not your fault." then we drive off into the sunset for California and we are happy.

But all good things in life come from moment-to-moment choices made on account of our beliefs. If we believe we can make money, we will work hard. If we believe marriages can work, we will work at our romantic relationship. If we believe we are worth it we will begin to push away people who don't feel the same.

All of this magic happens because of beliefs you hold in your head. And the beautiful thing? You chose your beliefs. It doesn't matter if you were beaten as a child. You can chose to believe that fathers love their daughters. It doesn't matter if you had a bad year in school, got sloppy, and now believe you are sloppy. You can chose to believe that you are organized.

So stop now and evaluate your beliefs. Do you have any that may not be serving you?

Public example: Britney Spears cheats on Justin Timberlake. He outs her. She begins to believe that she is the nightmarish creature who hurt someone she loved. Rather than see the truth: she is a human who made a terrible mistake. She starts shaving her head, giving children to losers, and can't seem to get a grip on her body. She now fights an uphill battle trying to prove to the world that she is alright. Alright. Think about how incredibly sad that is living the rest of your life just trying to PROVE that you are ALRIGHT.

My beliefs?

Love is.

I am a good person.

I am a good friend.

God loves me.

Friends are real.

People are inherently good.

Love is.

Family is.

Marriage is.

Happines, goodness, and joy are.

I love.

Love is.

And I am the 2010 Crossfit Games Champion.

What beliefs do you have about yourself that don't serve you?

Do you have some forgiving to do?

Who have you attracted into your life with faulty beliefs about yourself?

Who would you like to attract into your life?

Evaluate your thoughts. There are no breakthroughs. Only simple changes that come as a consequence of changing your thoughts.

What You DO vs. What You DON'T do

I keep getting sick. And I never get sick. I'm actually really grateful for it. It is my body in some ways telling me I have done something RIGHT. I am pushing my limits, changing my status quo, and taking it places it hasn't been. But it is also telling me I'm out of balance.

This is a chronic problem for me. The embedded philosophy of, "If I can, I may as well."

"If I have the energy I may as well go out tonight."
"If I have the money I may as well spend it."
"If I have the heart and the energy, I may as well try to fix something that isn't my problem."
I am drawing a line in the sand on this as of today, as I erect a moat around my castle and fly the flag of my "DO NOT" list.

Coach Joss of Westlake Crossfit - a body in balance

You see, it takes self discipline to DO. DO your workouts, DO set goals, DO strive, DO push your limits, DO take risks...

But it takes equal - if not more - self discipline to DO NOT.

DO NOT stay up late, DO NOT go out so much, DO NOT eat so much, DO NOT drink so much, DO NOT commit to time with friends just because you feel like someone should, DO NOT travel so much, DO NOT spend so much money...

But your body will evidence your lack of discipline on the latter "do not's" far quicker than it will manifest the results of the "do's."

So here is my list of DO NOT commitments for the 2010 Crossfit Games:

-I will not drink alcohol more than one night per week. I have made "Slight Edge" mistakes with alcohol almost daily for over a year.

-I will not stay up so late. I will shut my phone and my mind off at 9 p.m. on weeknights. I have been making "Slight Edge" mistakes with sleep for the entire course of my career.

-I will not eat so much. I've tightened up to Zone/Paleo but this is my biggest place for improvemenr for Games training.

-I will not spend so much money. I have made fantastic strides here since I tapped into life coaching and training with Dani Johnson, but my career goal is to live very simply with a very simple family and turn our profits into a foundation that addresses some of the horrors I came face-to-face with in the devastated regions of the Middle East: the Balkans, Central Asia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Palestine, Sudan. Atrocities like human trafficking, slavery, rape - the list goes on. Me being sloppy and buying a 6-pack a night or going out to get cheese for my tacos when I don't even need it will very quickly take this dream and make it just that - fantasy-land.

I invite all of you to bust me up on my "do not" list as we edge increasingly closer to the Games. We are all in this together.

Requiem for a Dream

"The thing that I tell you now

It may not go over well

And it may not be photo-op

in the way that I spell it out

But you won't hear from the messenger,

don't wanna know bout something that you don't understand,

You got no fear of the underdog, that's why you will not survive..."

Well I am in the Zone. Training for the 2010 Affiliate Cup with my team at Westlake Crossfit. My diet is perfect. I'm about to cut alcohol. Doing doubles to get me up to speed on my weaknesses. Propelled onward by a sense of competition, yes, but also commitment to my team.

If someone asked me to describe what makes me team unique, I would sum it up in this quote, taken from coach Jarrod Freshour's blog:

"I would rather excel others in the knowledge of what is excellent than in the extent of my powers and dominion." -Alexander the Great

I can't quite explain the culture of the gym, except to say that it is teeming with old souls who are commited first and foremost to being great people.

I was actually on the phone yesterday with coach Joss - who had called just to check in, see how I was feeling, where my head was - and he said something about never compromising being a good, kind human being regardless of the circumstance. That thought process underlies absolutely everything we do at Westlake Crossfit.

I have never heard gossip. I have never felt that 'spirit' you feel when you go somewhere you're not welcome. I've felt exactly the opposite: openness, welcomeness, and respect for individual strengths and a thirst to work on individual weaknesses. A special source of this has come from coach Jesse O'Brien - who until recently wasn't even a coach just a good, solid human being who wanted to help others achieve their individual potential.

This stands in stark contrast to what I have experienced at some other Crossfits. I was in a class once where some new people came in and were clearly timid. I reached out my hand to introduce myself just because it's the right thing to do as a human being and later found out that it was taken as me trying to 'insert' myself into the gym's "leadership."

We all struggle with making ourselves understood. Whether you are a skinny blonde girl who is always treated badly by other girls who are jealous, or a short, fat guy who can't do a squat without losing his breath. I can say without a doubt that you will have a home at Westlake Crossfit. Part of the reason I can say this is because I have experienced it myself - the love that the people at the gym have put on ME for exactly who I am, exactly where I am - nothing more, nothing less - has bled out into other areas of my life. I can honestly say that I am prouder to be ME because of that love.

So if you embrace a spirit of love, openness, sharing, encouragement, positivity, determination in the face of adversity, and a teensy anti-authoritarian / underdog streak... I encourage you to root for Westlake Crossfit at this year's Crossfit Affiliate Cup.

and there's so much you could learn but you don't want to know,
You will not back up an inch ever,
that's why you will not survive...
